How to Install a Solar Water Heater——Step Three:Finishing Up

【Step three :Finishing Up】

  • Now that we've done the plumbing we come back up to the roof and finish up there. Since we've gone ahead and done the plumbing on the roof, the tank has been filled with water plumbing.

  • When we're making attachments on the tank, the cap on both the sides and the fittings underneath the tank need to be taken out. We put some pipe thread sealant on the male and the female threads of the fitting and then teflon tape with at least four wraps over the male threads which will help get a water tight seal on this tank. It’s really important to do so because when you fill this with for example, 80 gallons of water you don't have to come back and drain it and then fix it and fill it again.

  • We use the solar flashings to flash each pipe, then it's insulated and then you have this silver butyl tape on top of that. Then we'll go ahead and move this down a touch and put some elbows over this to protect it from UV. We've got the temperature sensor wire run to here and the flashings are in there so we need to make sure everything's nice and water tight.

  • We also want to get the air vent and the temperature pressure valve put into the tank. So for those we just use the thread sealant. We point the temperature pressure valves to the back using PVC or copper pipes so you can run the discharge from the tank all the way down to the drain to not have really hot water on the roof material.

  • After the final touches on the roof, the next step is putting in the tubes.

  • Finally, we've got the tubes installed and everything is working and ready to go. Make sure to leave a little bit of room in these pieces. The bottom bracket should have a gap of about an inch or an inch and a half. We need to be cognizant of that when we’re putting in our L feet which are blocking the bottom bracket from going up any further. We can move the tank down from the top and that would achieve the same result but we do leave a little bit of extra space in this piece so that we have some room depending on our roof situation.

Thus, the solar water heater is installed and we can look forward to some solar heat.
